Cason Benton, MD, FAAP

Alabama Care Network Mid-State Medical Director

A practicing pediatrician for 21 years, Dr. Benton developed a strong interest in quality improvement after seeing how it improved care for her clinic’s patients. She practices at the UAB Primary Care Clinic at Children’s of Alabama and is an associate professor in UAB’s Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Benton attended medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed residency at The University of Washington in Seattle. She joined the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1998. Dr. Benton was medical director of the UAB Primary Care Clinic at Children’s of Alabama before becoming the founding director for the Alabama Child Health Improvement Alliance (ACHIA) in 2014.

Prior to becoming medical director for Alabama Care Network Mid-State, Dr. Benton served as medical director for a similar Medicaid program in the region starting in 2015. Dr. Benton is on the board of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The American Board of Pediatrics honored Dr. Benton with the 2018 Paul V. Miles Fellowship Award, given annually to an accomplished mid-career pediatrician dedicated to improving the quality of health care for children.

Michael Battle

Alabama Care Network Mid-State Executive Director

Michael has more than 15 years’ experience in the health care field, with a focus in recent years on developing collaborative relationships with providers to coordinate care, increase access, improve quality, and improve outcomes for residents of Alabama. Before Alabama Care Network Mid-State began in October 2019, Michael launched a Medicaid health home in 2015 to provide care coordination services for Medicaid recipients in 16 central and northeast Alabama counties, including Jefferson and Shelby Counties. As Executive Director of that health home, Michael facilitated the transition from the health home program to Medicaid’s current Alabama Coordinated Health Network program. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
